The 52nd Annual Conference was a huge success. Special guests included Steve Shapiro, ICC President, Barbara Koffron, ICC Board Member, Vaughn Wicker, ICC VP, State Government Relations & Wayne Goodwin, Assistant Insurance Commissioner. There were over 250 attendees including spouses and children. Please visit our photo page to view photos of the event! Your Board of Directors has sceduled a planning retreat for this fall to map out the direction of the organization for the next 5 years. This will enable the Board to discuss strategies to improve the effectiveness and goals of the NCBIA. If you have any suggestions that need to be discussed, please send me an email (W. O. Whaley) with your suggestions. This organization belongs to its members - the Building Inspectors across this state. I ask each one of you to consider service within the NCBIA. There are a number of committees that desperately needs your help. Currently there are two Area Director positions open. If you can spare the time to work on a committee or serve as a Board Member, please contact Barry Gupton for an application. There are many challenges that we face daily. Protection of our neighbors lives, property and livelihoods is a function of the trust placed with each of us. Loss of one life is unacceptable. We must understand and enforce the Building Code with a passion. We are all aware that the Building Code has been defined as "the worst possible construction allowed". The Building Code is a set of minimum standards and less than the minimum is "substandard". The Code changes periodically and our Winter Code SEminars is an excellent place to learn about these changes. Please attend at least one of our Winter Code Seminars in 2009. The seminars in the past several years have grown in attendance to almost 200 per seminar. If you have any suggestions for subject matter, please conatct Ed Cianfarra, Education Committee Chairman. I would also ask each of you to please be aware that the code making process is not just a techincal process where codes are based on techincal merit. The process is often a politcal process as well. Please help monitor the actions of the Legistlature and the Building Code Council. If you do not have a rapport with your local legislators, please develop one. As issues present themselves throughout the year we will be asking you to contact your Senators and Representatives to let them know your opinion of pending legislation. Please send me an email (W. O. Whaley) with your contact information if you wish to be kept informed of pending issues needing your support. |
