Requires certification from North Carolina Code Officials Qualification Board at level II or III in all areas of inspection with considerable work experience with NC Building Codes and building trades. Successful candidate must possess strong managerial experience; excellent problem-solving and customer service skills, high level of professionalism; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; valid NC driver’s license required. Degree in relevant field preferred. Reports to County Manager.

Reviews new construction plans; new up-fit plans, tenant change up-fit plans, addition plans, pier plans, change of occupancy plans, renovation plans, sign plans, school plans, tower plans, and modular site construction. Takes phone and email messages from designers with questions and changes to submitted plans. Meets with engineers and contractors; Issues stop work order; Checks for building specifications and code compliance for building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing;. Reviews architectural drawings for specifications and code compliance. Reviews structural drawings for compliance and reviews daycares for state standard requirements. Inspects new construction, new up-fit, additions, commercial piers, change for occupancy, renovations, signs, schools, towers, and commercial modular site construction. Completes ABC permit, daycare permit, group home, and foster home care inspections; completes agricultural electrical inspections; inspects unsafe buildings for condemnation. Inspects damages to buildings, plumbing upgrades, mechanical upgrades, electrical upgrades; performs fire prevention and life safety inspections; performs mobile home inspections; inspects demolition sites. Must have knowledge of building construction materials, methods and best practices; knowledge of state codes and laws as pertains to construction and life safety; knowledge of the principles and practices of building inspection; knowledge of county policies and procedures; Skill in reading and interpreting plans and specifications; skill in the use of personal computers; skill in interpersonal relations, and skill in dispute mediation and in oral and written communication. |
